The Clerk, as Head of the Counting House (Administrative Office), provided the main support to the Treasurer. He ensured that the business of the School was conducted efficiently, and managed the leases and the administration of the non-educational aspects. He was also responsible for the extensive record-keeping tasks, including the minute books and the registers of admissions and discharge. Nowadays, despite reduced responsibilities, the Clerk is the chief executive of the Foundation, and therefore has responsibility for the Endowment which provides the principal funding for the School.

The Clerk had many staff working for him in the Counting House, who so importantly have contributed to the running of Christ’s Hospital. These roles have changed across the years, not least since the move of the School to Horsham.
